Comedy fans across the country have come to love Gabriel Iglesias, the larger-than-life entertainer known to most of us as “Fluffy.” Iglesias first caught the public’s eye with his funny anecdotes, most of them concerning his weight, and his light, easygoing way of telling stories. In most of his appearances, he wears a loud Hawaiian shirt, a not-so-subtle hint at the funny, outspoken guy underneath.
Iglesias was born in San Diego, but spent most of his younger years in Long Beach, California. The youngest of six children, he explained that his last name was actually Iglecias but that his mother had changed it to spite his father for not being there at his birth. These and other such anecdotes are one of the main elements of his acts, brought to life by his animated narratives and silly antics.
Iglesias has been active in the comedy scene since 1997, but only got recognition when he started doing guest performances on TV. Since breaking into the mainstream in the early 2000s, the 34-year-old Iglesias has won over the Latin and American communities alike and brought to the scene a new brand of comedy that appeals to all audiences. He has also won several awards, including Comedy Special of the Year from Comcast Cable and Comedy Central in 2003. Today, he is one of the most popular acts on Comedy Central and was on the most requested list on the network’s Standup Showdown program. Besides storytelling, Iglesias has also done impersonations, often of fellow Latin-American acts like George Lopez, Paul Rodriguez and Carlos Mencia.
Perhaps one of Iglesias’ most famous gags is his “Five Levels of Fat” story, where he uses labels like “Big,” “Healthy,” “Husky,” “Fluffy,” and “Damn!” to describe his and other people’s girths. It is also where he came up with his own nickname, as he considers himself within the Fluffy range. As Iglesias did numerous shows on TV and on tour, the joke has become synonymous with his performances, and the nickname stuck. On one of his earlier shows, he made the popular claim “I’m not fat; I’m fluffy!”
Although less prominent on TV these days, Iglesias is busy doing live shows in the U.S. and abroad. His acts have also diversified to include more impersonations and personal anecdotes, making him all the more popular with old and new fans alike. The “Five Levels” joke has even evolved in itself, as Iglesias recently added a sixth called “Oh Hell No!” He has also made several TV guest appearances and done a number of shows outside the U.S.
Iglesias is currently on tour throughout the country, with shows scheduled in several major cities. From early to mid-September, he will be performing at the Lance Burton Theatre – Monte Carlo in Las Vegas, Nevada, followed by dates in South Bend, Waukegan, and Joliet, Illinois, and at the Pabst Theatre in Milwaukee. Through October, he will be doing shows in Laredo, Texas; Memphis, Thackerville, Oklahoma; Tucson, Shreveport and Baton Rouge; Orlando, and Santa Barbara, San Diego, and Temecula, California.
